The METSO programme will increase biodiversity in private forests
There is increasing interest among private forest owners in Finland in voluntary forest protection. The new METSO programme will provide with concrete tools for this. The objective of the METSO action programme is to halt the decline of biodiversity of forest habitats and species as well as to ensure the favourable trends in Southern Finlands forest ecosystems by 2016.

Nine Swedes out of ten love forest
Swedes love to spend time outdoors in the forest. A poll made by the Federation of Swedish Farmers LRF indicates that as much as 94 % of all Swedes find it important to spend time in the forest. Six persons out of ten also know that forest provides renewable energy and that it is beneficial for the climate.

Magazine is an ecologically sound alternative
Magazines constitute an ecologically beneficial user interface because you can enjoy reading a magazine without electricity. This is important for ecologically minded Finns. In the course of the life span of the annual volume of a weekly magazine the carbon footprint is approximately the same as those of a sixty kilometre trip by car.

EU's activities in international forest negotiations under scrutiny
EU has had rather limited success in UN negotiations concerning sustainable forestry. In her doctoral thesis Ms Gunilla Reischl in the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences has examined the factors, which have promoted respectively reduced EU's influence in various forestry questions.

Government stimulates bioenergy production in Norway
The Norwegian Government has proposed a stimulation package to alleviate the impact of the financial crisis. Among other things 50 million NOK (6 million ) will be appropriated for stimulating employment in the bioenergy and forest sectors, as well as for providing more forest-based raw materials for production of renewable energy.

Revised criteria for Finnish forest certification
The Finnish PEFC Forest Certification Standard Setting Working Group
has unanimously adopted new standards for Finland's PEFC forest certification. New criteria include, for example, standards concerning harvesting of energy wood, multi-purpose use of forests and use of foreign labour.
