Mr Juha Marttila, chairman of the Central Union of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners (MTK), proposes that Helsinki could be heated with forest based energy. He says that Helsinki could set an example for the whole country by using Finnish bio-energy for its distance heating.
In a seminar for Finnish entrepreneurs held on Saturday 5 September he said that the city's choice of energy source will be of great importance. Helsinki's example would help Finland to achieve the targets that the country set for itself in the EU energy and climate package.
In Mr Marttila's opinion Finnish forest owners and rural entrepreneurs have the resources to supply a sufficient quantity of raw material for heating plants. The use of forests for energy production would not constitute any loss of raw material for the wood processing industry. There is an ample supply of wood for both energy production and for other processing.
However, he emphasizes that the energy supply for industry cannot be ensured by renewable energy sources alone. More nuclear energy and hydro electric power will be required in order to supply enough electricity both for general consumption and for industry.
