Bio-energy exceeds aggregate consumption of nuclear energy and hydropower in Sweden

(06/10/2009)
This year the supply of bio-energy in Swedish energy consumption will attain 125 TWh. The aggregate production of nuclear energy and hydroelectric power will be 124 TWh.

Mr Gustav Melin, managing director of Svebio, The Swedish Bioenergy Association, says that a steady increase of bio-energy is the most important factor for creating a sustainable energy system in Sweden.

Bio-fuels are used by industry, mainly by the forest industry, as well as in distance heating plants for combined heat and electricity production (bio-energy), for private heating (pellets and firewood) and as propellants (ethanol, bio-diesel and bio-gas). Consumption is steadily increasing in all these sectors.

The determining factor in promoting this development are the carbon dioxide tax, green electricity certificates and tax exemption for bio-fuels. There must be strong general incentives, i.e. consumption of fossil fuels must be sanctioned by paying for carbon dioxide emissions.
