Loneliness makes young people quit forest jobs

(28/07/2009)
Loneliness in the forest is the most important reason why young forest machine drivers quit their jobs. For older drivers the most important reason is bad management.

Everybody cannot support sitting alone in a forest machine for days and days, in particular in winter when there is daylight for only a few hours. Primarily young drivers quit their jobs for that reason. Despite being aware that the job gives much independence many drivers are not prepared for the loneliness of the work.

This is the conclusion of recent research made by Ms Emelie Bergqvist, Bachelor of Forestry from the university of Umeå. In her graduation thesis she investigated the reasons why forest machine drivers prefer to leave the forestry branch.

Loneliness is the primary reason for young drivers. Many of them quit after only one year, although it usually takes two years to become really competent. In consequence the company having trained young drivers looses a lot of time and money.

On the whole only relatively few drivers quit. For example among the circa 600 forest machine drivers who work for the Holmen Group only 32 have quit during the last five years.
