The Federation of Swedish Farmers LRF and the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation have joined forces in the battle against climate change. They claim the Swedish Government's climate targets not to be ambitious enough and urge that renewable energy should constitute 70 % of the Swedish energy consumption by 2020. The current target of the government is 50 %.
The Federation of Swedish Farmers LRF and the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation have joined forces in a common strategy with the purpose of convincing politicians of the need to set more ambitious climate targets in Sweden. Mr Lars-Göran Pettersson, LRF chairman, says that both the Government's and the opposition's climate targets are too modest, both in respect of renewable energy and energy savings. EU and Sweden intend to increase energy efficiency by 20 % by 2020.
Organisations demand that the Government's and the opposition's goal to have 50 % of energy from renewable sources by 2020 should be increased to 70 %. They also demand that energy consumption in Sweden in relation to GDP shall decrease by 4 % per annum.
Mr Pettersson says that Swedish forestry and farming can produce all the 70 % of renewable energy that they now demand. - Our farming barometer proves that 7000 members are very interested in energy investments, both in respect of biogas, wind power and other types of energy. There is very much interest and we find it important to set long term national targets.
