Using wood for environment protection purposes

(14/12/2009)
Mr Juha Marttila, Chairman of the Central Union of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners (MTK), challenges the environment protection organizations to participate in a campaign to promote the use of Finnish wood for reducing the climate change.

In the MTK forest committee meeting in Espoo he said that it makes no sense to let forests rot and emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. It also makes no sense to produce renewable energy by methods which consume more than they produce. An it makes absolutely no sense to carry from beyond the oceans biofuels which are produced by destroying tropical forests.

He also said that wood should be used more extensively for replacing raw materials which are more harmful for the climate. In energy production this could be made most efficiently by replacing fossil fuels with wood and in the building sector by using wood instead of for example concrete and steel.

The positive impact of wood on the environment should be taken into account in all policy making and in rules and instructions concerning public procurement. In EU public procurement policies the favourable impact of wood on the environment should be rewarded. Wood used for building purposes binds carbon dioxide for many decades.
